Church History

Much of the Pollards Hill Estate was built around 1932. The residents of the estate at that time had to travel to nearby churches at Semley Road in Norbury, Lewin Road in Streatham, or Mitcham to worship. The vision for Pollards Hill Baptist Church was conceived in 1935, when several residents of the estate felt it was necessary to build a Baptist church on the estate to bring an opportunity for Christian Fellowship to the residents of Pollards Hill.

Ten foundation stones were laid in July 1939. The church opened in January 1940. During the war years many children were evacuated from the Pollards Hill area due to the threat of bombing, and the number of children attending the newly opened Sunday School dwindled to less than 10. However, once the war had ended the number of adults and children attending the church grew to over 220, making it necessary to add a hall and rooms for the Sunday School to meet.

The church hall was built in 1955 and named after a church elder called William Peake who was the first church secretary and had been instrumental in the building of the church.
